Iraq Citizens Deem U.S. Soldier As Sheik (shocka! a positive story from Iraq gets reported)
The AP actually breaks stride and publishes a positive Iraqi war story. Frankly the entire idea is genius; by naming ssgt Horn Sheik, the locals have invested a US soldier with responsibility for a range of villages. Talk about having a pipeline to the right ear. Troops (of all services) can scrounge and fineagle with the best. Good things happened for this village because of the foresight of the local elders.
This story would be smart to be circulated among other village elders. Hopefully the amount of press that this story alone will garner will not draw the Islamists hateful eye toward the villages.
Hats off to Sheik Horn, long may hey reign (even if he is leaving soon).

Read the whole thing, for it is good.

Iraq Citizens Deem U.S. Soldier As Sheik: "Mohammed, Horn's mentor and known for his dry sense of humor, eventually suggested during a meeting of village leaders that Horn be named a sheik. The sheiks approved by voice vote, Horn said.

Some sheiks later gave him five sheep and a postage stamp of land, fulfilling some of the requirements for sheikdom. Others encouraged him to start looking for a second wife, which Horn's spouse back in Florida immediately vetoed.

But what may have originally started as a joke among crusty village elders has sprouted into something serious enough for 100 to 200 village leaders to meet with Horn each month to discuss security issues.

And Horn doesn't take his responsibilities lightly. He lately has been prodding the Iraqi Education Ministry to pay local teachers, and he closely follows a water pipeline project that he hopes will ensure the steady flow of clean water to his villages.

'Ninety percent of the people in my area are shepherds or simple townspeople,' said Horn. 'They simply want to find a decent job to make enough money to provide food and a stable place for their people to live.'

To Horn's commanders, his success justifies his unorthodox approach: no rockets have hit their base in the last half year."

In 1994, 74,987 anchor babies in California hospital maternity units cost $215 million and constituted 36 percent of all Medi-Cal births. Now they account for substantially more than half."

The french are doing this right. Why aren't we?
: "The gulf between British and French treatment of preachers of hatred and violence was thrown sharply into focus yesterday when France announced the summary expulsion of a dozen Islamists between now and the end of August.

A tough new anti-terrorism package was unveiled by Nicolas Sarkozy, the interior minister and a popular centre-Right politician.

Nicolas Sarkozy
Nicolas Sarkozy: 'We have to act against radical preachers'

His proposals reflect French determination to act swiftly against extremists in defiance of the human rights lobby, which is noticeably less vocal in France than in Britain.

Imams and their followers who fuel anti-western feeling among impressionable young French Muslims will be rounded up and returned to their countries of origin, most commonly in France's case to its former north African colonies."

  LifeStyles of the modern Jihadi
I am seeing a new trend with our Jihadi-headchopper friends. More and more they all seem to end up in a hole, in their underwear, suing for mercy.

First we had our Ron Jeremy look-alike, er I mean Kahlid Mohammad:

Then we get Saddam looking fine in his skivies:

Now we have these three assholes.

They were shouting to him that he needed to come out with his arms up, in just his underwear.

"He was saying to them: 'how do I know when I come out, that you're not going to shoot me? I'm scared'."

Skivvie clad Jihadi's frog walking out the front door, hands clasped behind their heads. There is a thought that makes you all warm and reactionary inside.

The Tiny Minority of Extremists in our Midst (update) via Michelle Malkin
London bombs terror attack The Times and Sunday Times Times Online: "The sheer number of devices has raised fears that the scale of the July 7 bomb plot was much larger than originally imagined.

The presence of nailbombs graphically illustrates that the bombing cell wanted to inflict the maximum possible pain, injury and risk of death on innocent London commuters, security analysts say.

'You see what is bulging on the sides of the bottle are nails. Many, many nails,' said Robert Ayers, a security expert who was shown the pictures by the American ABC News channel last night"

The Tiny Minority of Extremists in our Midst
ABC News: Sources: July 7 London Bomb Plot May Have Been Much Larger: "LONDON, July 27, 2005 — The plot for the July 7 transit bombings in London, which killed 56 people, may have been much larger than previously known, ABC News has learned.

Sources familiar with the investigation tell ABC News an additional 12 bombs and four improvised detonators were found in the trunk of a car believed to be rented by suicide bomber Shehzad Tanweer. Police believe the bombers drove the car to Luton, where they boarded trains to London.

'I believe that the explosives left in that car were left there for a second strike,' said Bob Ayers, a London-based terrorism consultant with expertise in demolition. 'But the metropolitan police responded so quickly, they were able to get to the car and take control of the car before the second team could get the explosives and leave.'"

Deport terrorists, says Lib MP | National Breaking News | Breaking News 24/7 - NEWS.com.au (26-07-2005): "A FEDERAL Liberal MP is pushing for the deportation of immigrants convicted of inciting or engaged in terrorism.
Queensland MP Steve Ciobo said today he believed there was strong community support to annul the citizenship of immigrants who were convicted of terrorist offences and deport them to their country of origin.

'I think it's right and proper that if someone chooses to take a citizenship pledge which says that they will swear allegiance to their country and ... they then turn their backs on it I think Australians would be very supportive of saying 'Your citizenship should be annulled and we would expect you and we would do what you could to facilitate you leaving Australia',' Mr Ciobo told ABC radio."

lgf: Imam Warns Canada: Back Off Muslims
lgf: Imam Warns Canada: Back Off Muslims: "A controversial Toronto imam warned Public Safety Minister Anne McLellan at a closed-door meeting to stop “terrorizing” Canadian Muslims.

“If you try to cross the line I can’t guarantee what is going to happen. Our young people, we can’t control,” Aly Hindy, the head of Scarborough’s Salaheddin Islamic Centre, recalls telling the minister at the May meeting she held in Toronto with dozens of Muslim leaders.

The meeting was part of an effort by Ms. McLellan to reach out to Canadian Muslims amid complaints that the RCMP and Canadian Security Intelligence Service are engaging in racial profiling. ...

Mr. Hindy, who has long complained that CSIS is spying on him, his family and his mosque, told Ms. McLellan that a young Muslim woman complained to him she was roughed up by Canadian spies while her husband was away at prayers. This allegation could spur reprisals because “our women are the most valuable thing to us” and “for a Muslim, honour is more important than his life,” Mr. Hindy said in a recent interview.

He made the point to the minister. Several people who attended shrugged off the imam’s remarks, but some Muslims and government agents later approached Mr. Hindy asking him to explain himself.

“The police came to me and said, ‘This is a kind of threat,’ and I said yes,” he said. “But it’s for the good of this country. And they said, ‘Do you know some of the names of those people you expect to cause some problems?’ And I said, ‘You just open the telephone directory.’ ”"

The break-up of the AFL-CIO, I wish I could say that I cared.
NBC5.com - Money - Teamsters, SEIU Bolt From AFL-CIO: "It's a double jolt for organized labor.

The Teamsters and the Service Employees International Union have decided to bolt the AFL-CIO.

Teamsters' president James Hoffa said the AFL-CIO is taking an 'opposite approach' to what's needed to strengthen the labor movement -- and that's what's prompted his organization to leave.

And the Service Employees International Union -- the AFL-CIO's largest affiliate -- said it was leaving because the umbrella organization isn't changing with the times.

The unions earlier announced they were boycotting the federation's convention that began Monday in Chicago, a step that was widely considered to be a precursor to leaving the federation.

Two other unions -- the United Food and Commercial Workers and a group of textile and hotel workers -- also joined the boycott, a possible sign they may be the next to leave."

VDH, worth the time to read the whole thing
VDH's Private Papers::And Then They Came After Us: "
Meanwhile an odd thing happened. It turns out that the jihadists were cowards and bullies, and thus selective in their targets of hatred. A billion Chinese were left alone by radical Islam — even though the Chinese were secularists and mostly godless, as well as ruthless to their own Uighur Muslim minorities. Had bin Laden issued a fatwa against Beijing and slammed an airliner into a skyscraper in Shanghai, there is no telling what a nuclear China might have done.

India too got mostly a pass, other than the occasional murdering by Pakistani zealots. Yet India makes no effort to apologize to Muslims. When extremists occasionally riot and kill, they usually cease quickly before the response of a much more unpredictable angry populace.

What can we learn from all this?

Jihadists hardly target particular countries for their “unfair” foreign policies, since nations on five continents suffer jihadist attacks and thus all apparently must embrace an unfair foreign policy of some sort."

Instant messaging--better safe than sorry - TechUpdate - ZDNet: "What's the smartest way to use IM in your company? Establish your own IM service. By keeping your IM services within the corporate firewall and virtual private networks (VPN), you're in charge--not your users, not some third-party firm. Microsoft and Yahoo are both taking their messaging servers corporate. ICQ and IRC have long been available, but both have dismal security records. Other companies, such as Lotus, Jabber, NetLert, and Odigo, already have corporate server products available. If keeping message content private is a major concern, Mercury Prime is working on an encrypted IM system."

  lgf: Winston Churchill on Islamists
lgf: What Sir Winston Really Said: "“How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities - but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome.”

—Sir Winston Churchill, from The River War, first edition, Vol. II, pages 248-50 (London: Longmans, Green & Co., 1899)"

Captain's Quarters puts it better than I could have
Captain's Quarters: "The media, especially the British media who keep haranguing Tony Blair about causing the London bombings as a price for liberating Iraq, need to start adding two plus two and quit getting three for an answer. AQ operations point to a long-term strategy of isolating and crippling Middle East governments that (a) oppose radical Wahhabism and (b) operate in a secular manner that maintains ties to the West, especially Israel. That is the scope of the war Islamists have fought for twenty years under different banners -- Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, and now al-Qaeda. They want to seize power by force, cast a Taliban-style tyranny over the entirety of Southwest Asia and North Africa (to start), and bring the infidel world to its knees through the control of petroleum.

Why, four years after 9/11, does the media and the Left still fail to grasp this? Could it be because acknowledging this fact requires a stark choice to either fight or surrender, and they would prefer to create a fantasy through sophistry to allow them to simply go AWOL instead?"

  RoP in Egypt
We can hope that the ever accelerating pace of Islamic terrorism could spur the Western Left to something more than impotent handwringing and excuse making. We can hope, but I doubt it, the US/Chimpy McBushitler is still the bigger threat in their eyes, suicide bombers or no.

BBC NEWS | Middle East | Several killed in Egyptian blasts: "At least 25 people have been killed and more than 100 wounded in a string of explosions in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, police said.

Residents said the first explosion appeared to have taken place in a market area, which includes shops that are popular with tourists.

Witnesses said a four-star hotel was heavily damaged in another explosion in the nearby Naama Bay area.

Preliminary reports said the blasts might have been caused by car bombs."

_When users add e-mail addresses to a 'do-not-spam' list, Blue Security creates additional addresses, known as honeypots, designed to do nothing but attract spam.

_If a honeypot receives spam, Blue Security tries to warn the spammer. Then it triggers the Blue Frog software on a user's computer to send a complaint automatically.

_Thousands complaining at once will knock out a Web site and thus encourage spammers to stop sending e-mail to the 'do-not-spam' list."

Attacks on UK will continue, radical cleric says: "LONDON (Reuters) - Militant Islamists will continue to attack Britain until the government pulls its troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan, one of the country's most outspoken Islamic clerics said on Friday.

Speaking 15 days after bombers killed over 50 people in London and a day after a series of failed attacks on the city's transport network, Sheikh Omar Bakri Mohammed said the British capital should expect more violence.

'What happened yesterday confirmed that as long as the cause and the root problem is still there ... we will see the same effect we saw on July 7,' Bakri said.

'If the cause is still there the effect will happen again and again,' he said, adding he had no information about future attacks or contacts with people planning to carry out attacks.

Bakri, a Syrian-born cleric who has been vilified in Britain since 2001 when he praised the September 11 hijackers, said he did not believe the bombings and attempted attacks on London were carried out by British Muslims.

He condemned the killing of all innocent civilians but described attacks on British and U.S. troops in Muslim countries as 'pro-life' and justified.

In an interview with Reuters, Bakri described Osama bin Laden, leader of the radical Islamist network al Qaeda, as 'a sincere man who fights against evil forces.'

Bakri said he would like Britain to become an Islamic state but feared he would be deported before his dream was realized.

'I would like to see the Islamic flag fly, not only over number 10 Downing Street, but over the whole world,' he said."

  Horse-faced Harriden in a snit
I know that is unkind, but something about her just rubs me the wrong way. I watched the video of her 'incident'. Then the clip of her going after Sec Rice over it.
Yes, the Sudanese were WAY out of line for even touching an American Citizen in that manner. However, welcome to the third world Andrea. If the Sudanese are more than willing to exterminate their own citizens by the millions. What makes you think you are more than a speed bump on the way to an Islamic paradise.

NBC's Mitchell Angry After Sudan Incident - Yahoo! News: "NEW YORK - Andrea Mitchell said she felt angry and humiliated after Sudanese bodyguards dragged her out of a room Thursday for questioning President Omar el-Bashir about his involvement in the country's violence.

Large, gun-toting guards painfully wrenched the 5-foot-3 Mitchell's arm behind her. She was freed after U.S. officials accompanying Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice complained.

Mitchell, NBC News' diplomatic correspondent, was part of a press contingent following Rice on her visit to the war-torn African country."

Two new Luyang II guided missile destroyers are part of China's naval builduup.
The two Luyang II guided missile destroyers are Beijing's first Aegis-type ships. The ships are currently undergoing sea trials.

U.S. intelligence officials say China stole the technology for the Aegis battle management system by setting up a front company in the United States that became a subcontractor for the Aegis system manufacturer.

'Gay venues could be bombed by Islamic terrorists,' OutRage said Monday. 'All gay bars and clubs should introduce bag and body searches. Muslim fundamentalists have a violent hatred of lesbians and gay men. They believe we should be killed. Our community could be their next target. This is no time for complacency.'

The warning comes in the wake of this months terrorist attack in London. (story) More than 50 people died in the bombings that authorities say were the work of Islamic militants.

One bomb went off in a crowded bus, the others exploded in the subway system, two near stations in gay neighborhoods.

OutRage said that three of the group's officers have received 'repeated death threats from Islamic fundamentalists in recent weeks and months.'"

Cox & Forkum Editorial Cartoons: "One of the striking features of the post-9/11 world is the minimal degree of separation between the so-called 'extremists' and the establishment: Princess Haifa, wife of the Saudi ambassador to Washington, gives $130,000 to accomplices of the 9/11 terrorists; the head of the group that certifies Muslim chaplains for the US military turns out to be a bagman for terrorists; one of the London bombers gets given a tour of the House of Commons by a Labour MP. The Guardian hires as a 'trainee journalist' a member of Hizb ut Tahir, 'Britain's most radical Islamic group' (as his own newspaper described them) and in his first column post-7/7 he mocks the idea that anyone could be 'shocked' at a group of Yorkshiremen blowing up London:"

  The Religion of peaceful Co-Existance
It will be interesting to see if the Thai authorities take the measures that IMHO will need to be taken to exterminate the Islamist threat in their country. To my mind, something like a saw on a gangrenous limb.
The terrrorists are finding safe haven and some level of operational support from the local enclaves of muslims. Until the day that the local populations of muslims stop giving aid and comfort to the 'tiny minority' of Islamists in their midst. There should be no discrimination between those that shelter and those that do.

bakersfield.com | World: "
NARATHIWAT, Thailand (AP) - Thai authorities prepared Monday to impose a state of emergency for insurgency-hit areas of the country's Muslim south, as violence continued unabated with two slayings and a bombing that wounded seven security personnel.

A raid on the southern city of Yala by militants last week that left two policemen dead and 22 people injured prompted the Cabinet to adopt a decree Friday giving Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra sweeping new emergency powers.

The decree expands the government's authority to impose curfews, ban public gatherings, censor news, close publications, limit travel, detain suspects without charge, confiscate property and tap telephones. Critics complain that the decree is unconstitutional and dictatorial.

The measure would be imposed in the provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat and parts of nearby Songkhla province, Cabinet Secretary Bowornsak Uwanno said.

The Cabinet was expected to approve the recommendation and put the state of emergency into effect Tuesday, he said.

Former Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun, head of the National Reconciliation Commission assigned with seeking solutions to the problems in the south, met with Thaksin Monday night to discuss the measure. Anand earlier expressed concern about how the government was exercising power and whether human rights would be considered.

The Foreign Ministry on Monday briefed 58 foreign diplomats, including 12 ambassadors, on the new law.

Thaksin says the measure is necessary to curb violence in the south, where about 900 people have died in hundreds of drive-by shootings and scores of bombings since Islamic separatists launched their insurgency in January 2004."

Second Bush official named in ‘leak' probe
FT.com / World / US - Second Bush official named in ‘leak' probe: "US Vice-President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, Lewis I. “Scooter” Libby, spoke to a Time magazine reporter prior to the leaking of the name of a covert CIA agent, the reporter has told a grand jury investigating the issue.

Matt Cooper, who escaped a jail sentence when he agreed to testify in the case, told the jury that he spoke to Mr Libby as well as to Karl Rove, the deputy White House chief of staff and the top political adviser to US President George W. Bush.

The testimony places a second top Bush official at the centre of a politically charged investigation into whether anyone in the administration broke US laws in an effort to undermine a high-profile critic of the Iraq war.

In an account of his testimony published on Sunday, Mr Cooper said that neither Mr Libby nor Mr Rove revealed the name of the agent, nor did they mention her covert status. But the White House had previously denied that either man spoke to reporters about the issue. Mr Cooper also told NBC News on Sunday that there might have been other sources as well for the stories.

The grand jury, which is due to complete its work in October, is investigating whether anyone in the administration leaked the name of Valerie Plame, a former covert agent who is married to former ambassador Joseph Wilson, in an effort to discredit Mr Wilson's claims that the administration lied when it said Iraq was seeking uranium from Africa for a nuclear weapons programme."

  Barnyard Brothel turns Deadly
The Seattle Times: Local News: Enumclaw-area animal-sex case investigated: "King County sheriff's detectives are investigating the owners of an Enumclaw-area farm after a Seattle man died from injuries sustained while having sex with a horse boarded on the property.

Investigators first learned of the farm after the man died at Enumclaw Community Hospital July 2. The county Medical Examiner's Office ruled that the death was accidental and the result of having sex with a horse.

A surveillance camera picked up the license plate of the car that dropped the man off at the hospital, which led detectives to the farm and other people involved, said sheriff's Sgt. John Urquhart.

Deputies don't believe a crime occurred because bestiality is not illegal in Washington state and the horse was uninjured, said Urquhart.

But because investigators found chickens, goats and sheep on the property, they are looking into whether animal cruelty — which is a crime — was committed by having sex with these smaller, weaker animals, he said.

The farm was talked about in Internet chat rooms as a destination for people looking to have sex with livestock, he said.

'A significant number of people, we believe, have likely visited this farm,' said Urquhart."

"The notion that you can somehow defeat violence by submitting to it is simply a flight from fact.
Then and now, evil always wants more: "The BBC now refuses to refer to the London terrorists as 'terrorists.' They are to be known by the more neutral term 'bombers,' lest the public be deceived by 'the careless use of words which carry emotional or value judgments.' Value judgments about blowing up innocent commuters? How gauche!

Enlightened opinion ranging from Amnesty International to Dick Durbin joins in this moral relativism by suggesting that the United States has become no better than its enemies through the actions it has taken to prevent terrorism. Just as 1940s pacifists could see no difference between Nazi concentration camps and British wartime curtailments of civil liberties, so today's doppelgangers equate the abuses of renegade guards at Abu Ghraib with the mass murder carried out by Stalin or Pol Pot.

There is also an enduring tendency to blame the victim. George Galloway, Saddam Hussein's favorite member of Britain's Parliament, suggests that Londoners 'paid the price' for their government's 'attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq.' The implication is that Al Qaeda has reasonable grievances and if only we could satisfy them — by, for instance, exiting Iraq — we would have peace. The same thing was said about Hitler, who complained that Germany had been wronged by the Treaty of Versailles.

The problem was that Hitler's stated demands were a pretext for his maniacal ambitions. He was unappeasable. So is Osama bin Laden, who wants to avenge centuries of humiliation supposedly suffered by Muslims at Christian hands and who dreams of establishing a Taliban-style caliphate over all the lands once dominated by Muslims, from western China to southern Spain. Pulling out of Iraq would only whet his insatiable appetite for destruction, just as giving up the Sudetenland encouraged Hitler to seek more."

Tokyo Governor Sued for Insulting French - Yahoo! News: "TOKYO - A group of teachers and translators in Japan on Wednesday sued Tokyo's outspoken nationalist governor for allegedly calling French a 'failed international language,' a news report said.

Twenty-one people filed the lawsuit at the Tokyo District Court, demanding that Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara pay a total of 10.5 million yen ($94,600) compensation for insulting the French language in remarks last October, national broadcaster NHK said.

In their suit, the plaintiffs accused Ishihara of saying: 'French is a failed international language because it cannot be used to count numbers.'

'It's natural for different languages to have different names for numbers and different ways of counting them, so it's unacceptable for him to insult French in this way,' Malik Berkane, who heads a French-language school in Tokyo, told reporters at a news conference."

Ukraine seems to be digging themselves a nice hole. Interesting article (via freeperRSS)
RIA Novosti - Opinion & analysis - Ukraine: Gas war on three fronts: "New gas relations began to be built immediately after the Orange Revolution, and largely at the Ukrainian side's initiative acquired a scandalous shade almost immediately. The 'disappearance' of 7.8 bln cu m of Russian gas from Ukrainian gas storage facilities reminded Gazprom of the not-too-distant past of unsanctioned gas siphoning.

However, in the new situation Gazprom will not stomach such losses, and hence it applauded the Ukrainian side's proposal settlements for gas transit in cash. The switch to market prices - $160 per 1,000 cu m - came as a shock to Kiev. Alexei Ivchenko, Ukraine's deputy fuel and energy minister and head of Naftogaz Ukraine, had offered $60. Optionally, he is ready to spread payment for these supplies over four years. This, apparently, is a Ukrainian version of the compromise.

In an attempt to find a solution, Gazprom proposed to offset the missing gas against gas transit to Europe. At present, Ukraine receives 23 bln cu m of natural gas a year, while Gazprom's offset reduces this volume to 15.2 bln cu m. Kiev immediately went on the offensive. 'If Gazprom proposes this offset, our proposal is to include this gas into payments for gas exports to Europe via Ukraine,' Ivchenko said. One lawmaker explained this covert threat thus: 'If Gazprom refuses to supply the above-mentioned 7.8 bln cu m of gas, the transit route goes via Ukraine anyway, so we can take as much gas as we need.'"

Internet Haganah::Haganah b' Internet: "Among the world leaders felicitating Iran's president-elect, Mahmud Ahmadinejad, one head of state conspicuously set aside protocol norms - President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela. Though Ahmadinejad will only be formally sworn in on August 4 - and a congratulatory message through diplomatic channels at this stage was all that was required - Chavez telephoned Ahmadinejad.

Chavez was being deliberate in making an extraordinary gesture of warmth and camaraderie. He wished to personally convey to Ahmadinejad that the latter's election had enhanced the 'legitimacy' of Iran internationally, a country that Venezuela would regard as a 'friend and brotherly nation' on the world stage. He said he would depute a high-level delegation from Caracas to visit Tehran specially to be present at Ahmadinejad's swearing-in ceremony, and that he would visit Tehran in the near future, aiming at a 'comprehensive expansion' of cooperation between the two countries."

Josh whips out the clue-by-four and smacks some sense into the tinfoil crowd
Right Wing News (Conservative News and Views): "Myths debunked in this column include:

1) George Bush lied about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
2) A study released in March of 2003 by a British medical journal, the Lancet, showed that 100,000 civilians had been killed as a result of the US invasion.
3) The Bush Administration claimed Iraq was responsible for 9/11.
4) The war in Iraq was actually planned by people like Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and Paul Wolfowitz back in 1998 at a think tank called the Project for the New American Century.
5) The war on terror has nothing to do with Iraq.
6) Saddam Hussein had no ties to terrorism.
7) Saddam Hussein had no ties to Al-Qaeda.
8) The Downing Street Memo proves Bush lied to the American people about the war."

Wired News: Google Squashes 'Typosquatting': "SAN FRANCISCO -- An internet arbitrator has awarded Google the rights to several website addresses that relied on typographical errors to exploit the online search engine's popularity so computer viruses and other malicious software could be unleashed on unsuspecting visitors.

The National Arbitration Forum, a legal alternate to litigating in court, sided with a Google complaint alleging that Sergey Gridasov of St. Petersburg, Russia, had engaged in 'typosquatting' by operating websites named googkle.com, ghoogle.com and gooigle.com."

Interesting article on Directed Energy weapons. Everything from pain inducers to directed lightening strikes.
Wired News: Beam It Right There, Scotty: "The hallmark of all directed-energy weapons is that the target -- whether a human or a mechanical object -- has no chance to avoid the shot because it moves at the speed of light. At some frequencies, it can penetrate walls.

Since the ammunition is merely light or radio waves, directed-energy weapons are limited only by the supply of electricity. And they don't involve chemicals or projectiles that can be inaccurate, accidentally cause injury or violate international treaties."

New Jersey Legislator Wants to Ban Smoking in Your Car: "Lighting up while driving would become a crime if legislation proposed by New Jersey Assemblyman John McKeon (D-Essex) makes it into law. Assembly bill 4306 would allow police to issue an extra $250 ticket to a smoking motorist who is pulled over for a primary offense such as speeding. The bill has the heavyweight support of the Assembly's majority leader, Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen) and has been referred to the Assembly's Transportation Committee for consideration."

London Muslims Fear Backlash After Bombs: "Outside, some Muslims said the attacks had made them more cautious on the streets, but others said they were secure in their identity as Londoners _ confident of the city's tolerant traditions.

'It will have some impact on people. But this is London, a cosmopolitan city,' said student Ali Ayubi. 'Maybe after one or two months it will go back to normal.'

At the huge brick mosque in an East End neighborhood that's home to many with roots in Pakistan and Bangladesh, imam Sheikh Abdul Qayyum told worshippers that Muslims were 'part of the rich diversity of British life.'"

Leaked No 10 dossier reveals Al-Qaeda’s British recruits - Sunday Times - Times Online: "AL-QAEDA is secretly recruiting affluent, middle-class Muslims in British universities and colleges to carry out terrorist attacks in this country, leaked Whitehall documents reveal.

A network of “extremist recruiters” is circulating on campuses targeting people with “technical and professional qualifications”, particularly engineering and IT degrees.

Yesterday it emerged that last week’s London bombings were a sophisticated attack with all the devices detonating on the Underground within 50 seconds of each other. The police believe those behind the outrage may be home-grown British terrorists with no criminal backgrounds and possessing technical expertise.

A joint Home Office and Foreign Office dossier — Young Muslims and Extremism — prepared for the prime minister last year, said Britain might now be harbouring thousands of Al-Qaeda sympathisers."

  Welcome to the future
My Way News: "MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - Two days before the oldest and best-known U.S. civil rights group holds its yearly convention in Milwaukee, black leaders in the city say their community is being torn apart from the inside.

Civil rights leaders like 57-year-old Prentice McKinney, who fought to free Milwaukee's blacks from the ghetto, say gangs, drugs and violence have left those who still live in the nation's urban cores in fear of the next generation.

'Back then, the enemy was clear, it was white racists, and racist police officers,' said McKinney, who was a black teen-age 'commando' in the 1960s and now runs a tavern once frequented by fellow activists.

'It was a legalized system of segregation. And so, the challenge was between the white establishment and the African-American population. Today, the African-American population is being destroyed by its own youth ... an enemy from within.'

He and others interviewed before the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's six-day meeting beginning on Saturday see a changed city where a generation of blacks freed from the shackles of yesterday's legalized discrimination are held hostage by today's crime and poverty.

'You have a population of older African-Americans ... who are now afraid of the children in their neighborhoods,' McKinney said."

6 Blasts Rock London, Killing at Least Two: "LONDON -- Half a dozen explosions rocked the London subway and tore open a packed double-decker bus during the morning rush hour Thursday. The blasts killed at least two people and injured scores in what a shaken Prime Minister Tony Blair said was a series of 'barbaric' terrorist attacks.

Blair said it was clear the attacks were designed to coincide with the opening of the G-8 summit in Gleneagles, Scotland. The prime minister said the meeting of world leaders would continue but that he would return to London.

'Whatever they do, it is our determination that they will never succeed in destroying what we hold dear in this country and in other civilized nations throughout the world,' Blair said a day after London was awarded the 2012 Olympics.

Bloodied and bandaged witnesses reported panicked crowds fleeing the blast sites. A witness at the bus explosion said the entire top deck of the bus was destroyed."

LIVE 8 Article | Reuters.com: "SIRTE, Libya (Reuters) - Mozambique President Armando Guebuza, whose country will win more than $2 billion in debt write-off under a plan by rich nations, said on Wednesday the days of squandering foreign aid were over in Africa.

In an interview with Reuters after an African Union summit in Libya, Guebuza urged wealthy countries to put their faith in what he said was a new Africa prepared to confront its problems and keen to invest in fighting poverty.

'There are those who do not see that we can define strategies of our own to grow our economies and they only see what they think are wrongs of the continent and say it is the way of the African to be wasteful or corrupt,' Guebuza said.

'The days of squandering aid are over,' he told Reuters ahead of a summit of the Group of Eight industrialized countries in Scotland, adding that close government monitoring of donor funds would help ensure it reached the intended recipients."

  PW gets hit by 'hacktivists'
ProtestWarrior.com: "In January 2005, Jeremy Hammond and the hacker group collectively known as the 'Internet Liberation Front' gained illegal access to the ProtestWarrior server. Thousands of customer credit card numbers were then stolen for the purpose of making millions of dollars in donations to various leftwing organizations. In early February, ProtestWarrior discovered the illegal breach and the identity of the criminals responsible.

Upon discovering the hack, we immediately began collecting information on the breach and managed to penetrate Jeremy's inner circle. We then collected evidence that more than 5,000 credit card numbers had been stolen by Jeremy and the "Internet Liberation Front" and that they were planning on doing the following:

*charge hundreds of dollars per stolen credit card number as donations to various left-wing organizations by using an automated donation submission script

*send the entire ProtestWarrior HQ database (complete with usernames, passwords, and operation details) to left-wing groups hostile to ProtestWarrior (including the entire contents of our mail server)

*upload all credit card numbers and other sensitive customer information to hundreds of anarchist and left-wing sites (specifically Indymedia) as a downloadable zip file

IMMIGRATION: JOINT EXPULSION PLAN AGREED: "Evian, France, 5 July (AKI) - European Union countries are to carry out joint expulsions of illegal immigrants, France's interior minister Nicolas Sarkozy announced at the end of a two-day meeting of France, Italy, Spain, Great Britain and Germany's interior ministers (G5) at the spa town of Evian. Italy's interior minister, Giuseppe Pisanu, said the measures contained in this 'important accord' will be introduced 'in a fews days' time'. They were unanimously agreed by all five interior ministers.
'We have decided to pool our financial and political resources, and to jointly organise flights to repatriate illegal immigrants, said Sarkozy. 'Europe as a political entity is sending a clear message to would-be immigrants' countries of origin: those allowed in will have legal documents. Those without these will be deported - but as this is an expensive process, we have decided to split the costs,' he said.

Interior ministers agreed that information will be exchanged to enable illegal immigrants coming from the same country, who have been apprehended in different EU countries, to be put on the same planes home.

'The illegal immigrants will be escorted by police from the countries where they were arrested,' Pisanu confirmed. 'But it will first be established whether they have any right to remain in these countries, under international law,' he stressed. "

CNN.com - UK cleric Abu Hamza's trial opens - Jul 5, 2005: "LONDON, England (AP) -- Radical Islamic cleric Abu Hamza al-Mazri has appeared in a London court on charges including encouraging the murder of Jews and other non-Muslims.

Tuesday had been set for the start of Abu Hamza's trial, but the first session was taken up with legal arguments, which are expected to continue all week. Court orders forbid any reporting of the arguments, which take place without a jury present.

Abu Hamza, wearing a blue smock and with neatly trimmed gray hair and beard, was surrounded by four guards as he stood in the dock at the Central Criminal Court.

He pleaded innocent to all charges at a hearing in January.

'From my point of view and Abu Hamza's point of view, we don't see Muslims as terrorists, we see the Western governments as the real terrorists,' the cleric's spokesman, Abu Abdullah, said in a telephone interview."

Officers grovel and promise not to uphold the law.
HoustonChronicle.com - Officers told not to photograph illegal day workers: "The Houston Police Department has instructed officers not to photograph illegal immigrants seeking day jobs, after an incident last month prompted an outcry from an immigrant rights group.

Houston police Capt. Juan Trevino made the pledge to 400 people who attended a meeting Tuesday night organized by The Metropolitan Organization, an interfaith grass-roots political action group.

Trevino said that 'an isolated handful of officers' took immigrants' photographs after a business owner on North Shepherd recently complained that they 'were walking on private property.'

Addressing the TMO gathering in Spanish and English, Trevino said that the Houston police department will work with the organization to encourage immigrant workers to seek work at the east side day labor center.

'We have initiated a policy where, at this time, we are instructing all officers that they cannot photograph any of the day laborers that are currently out in the field,' Trevino said."

International news from swissinfo, the Swiss news platform: "TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's hardline-dominated parliament on Tuesday passed the outlines of a bill that imposes tougher punishments on those caught buying, selling or making alcohol, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Under the country's strict Islamic law, only members of non-Muslim religious minorities are allowed to make and drink alcohol. Trade in liquor is forbidden.

The bill's outlines almost doubles the punishment for distribution and production of alcohol, banned since Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution."

  Mugabe say: It's just nonsense
World News Article | Reuters.co.uk: "SIRTE, Libya (Reuters) - Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe denied on Tuesday that his crackdown on illegal shantytowns had made hundreds of thousands of people homeless.

'There is no demolition campaign. It's a clean-up operation and that's what all countries do,' he said in brief remarks to reporters at an African Union (AU) summit in Libya.

Western countries have been highly critical of Zimbabwe's 'Operation Restore Order' -- a six-week police blitz which is estimated to have made 300,000 people homeless.

But Mugabe's government says the clean-up campaign is aimed at rooting out black market trading and other criminal activity in poor urban areas.

Asked by a journalist about reports that 'hundreds of thousands' of people had been made homeless by the campaign, he replied: 'Where are they? We don't know about those. It's just nonsense.'"

L.A. Daily News - Their Opinion: "Imagine if someone like Michael Moore had been at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777.

He probably would have already printed several pamphlets about the racist, sexist and speciesist system devised by such radical right-wing white men as Patrick Henry and Thomas Paine. At Valley Forge, he would have had a field day talking to shoeless soldiers suffering in the snow and asking them what they thought of their commander-in-chief.

And who was the 'front man' for all this? Who was the man who had brought the alleged Continental Army to the brink of destruction as it wintered in Valley Forge just a little more than a year after the signing of the Declaration of Independence?

To our historical Michael Moore, this would be just another George W. He would probably tell the readers of his pamphlet that this particular G.W.'s only prior claim to fame was being in the moral equivalent of the British National Guard as an officer whose solitary achievement was bungling into capture by the enemy in the French and Indian War"

  Welcome to the party handwringers
At some point Zarqawi will go to far for even the striped shirt crowd to excuse. Of course the amount of innocent blood that has to be shed before the fence sitters and handwringers are compelled to act is going to be staggering.
However remember, I would rather have all the asshats streaming into the ME to fight their 'holy' fight, than have then headed to NY or LA.
In this case we are able to maintain a significant level of control over the battlefield. Additionally since the combat zone is in a Muslim country, the rest of the Muslims get to see the concequences of jihad second hand via Jihad-TV. It's not going to be nearly as much fun writing those remittance checks to the world-wide Muslim rearming and resupply network,,,er....Muslim Charities when the donors are directly responsible for funding the head-choppers.

New York City - National News: "BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Gunmen ambushed two more top diplomats from Muslim countries Tuesday in apparent kidnap bids that seemed aimed at scaring off foreign governments and isolating Iraq from the Arab world. Pakistan responded by announcing the withdrawal of its ambassador.

The attacks, targeting diplomats from Bahrain as well as Pakistan, came three days after gunmen seized Egypt's top envoy to Iraq as he was buying a newspaper in the capital. The Egyptian envoy is still being held. "

CBC Ottawa - NCC sorry for nixing Corn Cob Bob from Canada Day: "CBC NEWS – The National Capital Commission has apologized for banning an alternative-fuel mascot from its Canada Day celebrations at the request of a major oil company.

Corn Cob Bob is the front man for the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association,External link a not-for-profit group that promotes clean energy.

The association had secured an information booth at Major's Hill Park through the NCC, which had even offered a 50-per-cent discount on the usual fees.

But last Wednesday, the commission called to cancel the arrangement after pressure from Shell Canada, a key sponsor for the Canada Day celebrations in the capital.

Kory Teneycke, the executive director of Canadian Renewable Fuel Association, was surprised by the call.

'They said they were very sorry but they said one of their major sponsors had indicated there was a conflict between the message that we were promoting and their company's interests,' he said.

Teneycke says the NCC shouldn't be in the business of caving into corporate pressures and curbing free speech."

The Arab Bank issues Martyr Kits for splodeydopes
New York Post Online Edition:: "Secret documents known as 'martyrs' kits' obtained by The Post provide a startling glimpse into the world of suicide bombers, who are recruited with promises that their families will be well taken care of financially.

These kits ensure that the families of Hamas, PLO and Palestinian Islamic Jihad killers get generous 'charitable donations' from Saudi Arabia-based organizations and, while he was in power, Saddam Hussein.

The documents reviewed by The Post include a martyr kit for Maher Kamel Hbeishe, a Hamas fanatic who blew himself up on a Haifa bus Dec. 2, 2001, killing 15 Israelis and wounding 40.

Much of the kit's paperwork carries the corporate logo of the Arab Bank — the Middle East's most important and influential financial institution — and the numbers of the accounts through which his family was paid.

The cover on Hbeishe's file — in the records of Saudi relief committees — proclaims: 'the martyrs receive reward from their Lord, they and their light.'"

  China demands!
China Tells Congress To Back Off Businesses: "SHANGHAI, July 4 -- The Chinese government on Monday sharply criticized the United States for threatening to erect barriers aimed at preventing the attempted takeover of the American oil company Unocal Corp. by one of China's three largest energy firms, CNOOC Ltd.

Four days after the House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a resolution urging the Bush administration to block the proposed transaction as a threat to national security, China's Foreign Ministry excoriated Congress for injecting politics into what it characterized as a standard business matter.

'We demand that the U.S. Congress correct its mistaken ways of politicizing economic and trade issues and stop interfering in the normal commercial exchanges between enterprises of the two countries,' the Foreign Ministry said in a written statement. 'CNOOC's bid to take over the U.S. Unocal company is a normal commercial activity between enterprises and should not fall victim to political interference. The development of economic and trade cooperation between China and the United States conforms to the interests of both sides.'"

Astrologer wails and knashes her teeth over NASA tampering with her livelihood
My Way News: "MOSCOW (AP) - NASA's mission that sent a space probe smashing into a comet raised more than cosmic dust - it also brought a lawsuit from a Russian astrologer.

Marina Bai has sued the U.S. space agency, claiming the Deep Impact probe that punched a crater into the comet Tempel 1 late Sunday 'ruins the natural balance of forces in the universe,' the newspaper Izvestia reported Tuesday. A Moscow court has postponed hearings on the case until late July, the paper said.

The probe's comet crash sent up a cloud of debris that scientists hope to examine to learn how the solar system was formed.

Bai is seeking damages totaling 8.7 billion rubles ($300 million) - the approximate equivalent of the mission's cost - for her 'moral sufferings,' Izvestia said, citing her lawyer Alexander Molokhov. She earlier told the paper that the experiment would 'deform her horoscope.'

NASA representatives in Russia could not immediately be reached for comment."

If you lock your doors, and windows, why in the hell wouldn't you lock your network. This day and age there is no excuse.
State: Wi-Fi cloaks a new breed of intruder: "Police say Benjamin Smith III, 41, used his Acer brand laptop to hack into Dinon's wireless Internet network. The April 20 arrest is considered the first of its kind in Tampa Bay and among only a few so far nationwide.

'It's so new statistics are not kept,' said Special Agent Bob Breeden, head of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's computer crime division.

But experts believe there are scores of incidents occurring undetected, sometimes to frightening effect. People have used the cloak of wireless to traffic in child pornography, steal credit card information and send death threats, according to authorities.

For as worrisome as it seems, wireless mooching is easily preventable by turning on encryption or requiring passwords. The problem, security experts say, is many people do not take the time or are unsure how to secure their wireless access from intruders. Dinon knew what to do. 'But I never did it because my neighbors are older.'

A drive through downtown St. Petersburg shows how porous networks can be. In less than five minutes, a Times reporter with a laptop found 14 wireless access points, six of which were wide open. 'I'll guarantee there are tons of people out there who have their wireless network being exploited but have no idea,' Breeden said. 'And as we see more people utilizing wireless, we'll see more people being victimized.'"

The technology has made life easier for high-tech criminals because it provides near anonymity. Each online connection generates an Internet Protocol Address, a unique set of numbers that can be traced back to a house or business.

That's still the case with Wi-Fi but if a criminal taps into a network, his actions would lead to the owner of that network. By the time authorities show up to investigate, the hacker would be gone.

"Anything they do traces back to your house and chances are we're going to knock on your door," Breeden said.

Hopefully US forces will be adroit enough to capitalize on this
Telegraph | News | US delight as Iraqi rebels turn their guns on al-Qa'eda: "American troops on the Syrian border are enjoying a battle they have long waited to see - a clash between foreign al-Qa'eda fighters and Iraqi insurgents.

Tribal leaders in Husaybah are attacking followers of Abu Musab Zarqawi, the Jordanian-born terrorist who established the town as an entry point for al-Qa'eda jihadists being smuggled into the country.

The reason, the US military believes, is frustration at the heavy-handed approach of the foreigners, who have kidnapped and assassinated local leaders and imposed a strict Islamic code.

Fighting, which could be clearly heard at night over the weekend, first broke out in May when as many as 50 mortar rounds were fired across the city. But, to the surprise of the American garrison, this time it was not the target.

If a shell landed near the US base, 'they'd adjust their fire and not shoot at us', Lt Col Tim Mundy said. 'They shot at each other.'

The trigger was the assassination of a tribal sheikh, from the Sulaiman tribe, ordered by Zarqawi for inviting senior US marines for lunch. American troops gained an insight into the measures the jihadists had imposed during recent house-to-house searches in nearby towns and villages.

The joy's of zero tolerance. It's a shame that we have to have this level of enforcement.
He grabbed girl's arm -- now he's a sex offender: "Fitzroy Barnaby said he had to swerve to avoid hitting the 14-year-old Des Plaines girl who walked in front of his car.

She said he yelled, 'Come here, little girl,' before getting out of his car and grabbing her by the arm.

He said he simply lectured her.

She said she broke free and ran, fearful of what he'd do next.

In a Thursday ruling, the Appellate Court of Illinois said the 28-year-old Evanston man must register as a sex offender.

While acknowledging it might be 'unfair for [Barnaby] to suffer the stigmatization of being labeled a sex offender when his crime was not sexually motivated,' the court said his actions are the type that are 'often a precursor' to a child being abducted or molested.

Though Barnaby was acquitted of attempted kidnapping and child abduction charges stemming from the November 2002 incident, he was convicted of unlawful restraint of a minor -- which is a sex offense."

Wizbang: "NBC's Brian Williams thinks a comparison between our founding fathers and the Islamic terrorists we're fighting in Iraq is an issue worth debating.

Let's highlight just a few of the major differences between the terrorists in Iraq and the revolutionaries who founded this country, shall we?.

1. Our founding fathers organized an army of men and met the British army on the field of battle. The terrorists pose as citizens and hide behind their women and children.

2. Our founding fathers never chopped the heads off captive British soldiers or civilians.

3. Our founding fathers fought, in part, for the freedom to practice religion openly. The terrorists are fighting to force their brand of religious dogma down the throats of everybody else.

4. Our founding fathers never targeted civilians with suicide attacks. Suicide attacks, especially those using brainwashed women and children, are the bread and butter of the terrorists.

And, perhaps most importantly:

5. The terrorists are fighting against the spread of freedom. Our founding fathers fought against an oppressive British regime to spread freedom.

Despite what Brian Williams thinks, I don't believe this is an issue worth debating. The comparisons aren't even remotely apt and even engaging in the discussion lends a semblance of legitimacy to the murderous, fascist tyrants we're fighting in Iraq and around the world."
