Enough! Militarize the Border
Yahoo! News - U.S. boosts border force as private patrols gear up
: "Two days before citizen patrols of the U.S. border with Mexico are to begin, the Bush administration on Wednesday unveiled plans to expand last summer's controversial dragnet of illegal immigrants traversing the desert.
While federal officials insisted their move to reassign 534 additional agents along the border in Arizona wasn't a response to the coming Minuteman Project patrols, the dueling events are expected to intensify attention on securing a border that federal officials said remains largely an 'open door' for illegal immigrants and possibly Al Qaeda terrorists.
About 155 agents will be sent immediately to the nation's biggest smuggling route for migrants and drugs--the remote deserts and mountains on either side of the Arizona-Mexico border--and the remainder will be put in place during the year.
In all, 3,000 of the nation's 11,000 Border Patrol agents, or about 1 in 4, would be stationed in Arizona, where more than half of all border apprehensions occurred last year."
