: "In a controversial issue of national interest, Los Angeles County agreed Tuesday to let sheriff's employees conduct immigration enforcement interviews in jails.
The Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 for an agreement with the federal Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement to train six sheriff's workers to interview foreign-born inmates.
The employees will determine if the inmates should be turned over to federal authorities for possible deportation after their jail sentences.
Currently, two ICE agents process about two dozen inmates a day, referring 12 to 15 to federal officials. With the additional help, jail officials estimate they will process 100 to 125 inmates a day, referring 75 or more each day.
Criminal illegal aliens cost county taxpayers more than $150 million a year, according to a county estimate. Of the 17,500 inmates now in custody, more than 4,300 are foreign-born.
'There is a very high rate of recidivism among them,' said Chuck Jackson, chief of the Correctional Services Division. 'Most of these criminal aliens victimize their own communities.'"
